Unlocking New Doors with Digital Literacy
Meet Margaret, an inspiring adult learner who has bravely stepped into the digital world. Her journey began when she found herself struggling to use her phone. She reached out to the York County Agency on Aging for advice. This led her to York Literacy Institute’s (YLI) Digital Literacy Class at PA CareerLink, where she discovered a whole new realm of possibilities.

Margaret shares, “I’ve been taking classes for a few months. It’s helped me so much to learn things that I did not know.” With the support of her instructor, Claudia, Margaret has flourished. Margaret recalls learning about wifi, Google Chrome, search engines, and how to use her Gmail. Learning these skills has made her more comfortable using her phone and computer. When asked what she thought about using ChatGPT for the first time, she replied,

“I think it’s awesome. I feel more educated, and I’m ready to learn again.”

Margaret is embracing new challenges with enthusiasm. “I’m going to further my career on the computer because the world runs on computers now,” she says with a smile. Now, she is actively working on her resume in preparation to re-enter the workforce and utilize her new skills.

Margaret’s experience is a reminder that it’s never too late to learn. She encourages others to take the leap:

“Take the class. It’s going to help you so much more—don’t be afraid. Step through the door.”

Her inspiring story illustrates the strength of self-determination and how gaining knowledge can empower anyone to explore new opportunities in today’s digital world.
