Transforming Lives: Reflections of a Volunteer Tutor

Alexis Stegemann’s commitment to community service is deeply rooted in her life-long history of volunteering. Since 2016, she has been a dedicated tutor at the York Literacy Institute (YLI), where she provides educational support to adults preparing to take High School Equivalency Exams (HSE) Alexis reflects,

“Community was always important to me. And I found that with the Literacy Institute now.”

With a passion for helping others, she has helped transform not only her students’ lives but her own as well, finding fulfillment in the connections she has built along the way.

Throughout her tutoring experiences, Alexis has focused primarily on HSE students, which she finds particularly rewarding. “You do see the results right away because that piece of paper opens the door to so many opportunities for these students,” she explains. Many of her students, often in their 30s and facing various life challenges, look to gain their HSE Certificate to improve their economic circumstances. Alexis emphasizes the dedication of adult learners, recognizing the hurdles her students overcome:

“It’s quite awe-inspiring to see these young people that really have come to terms with their situation and know there’s a way they can make it better.”

Alexis’ relationship with her students goes beyond traditional tutoring; she becomes a resource and a confidante in their journey toward education. “It mushrooms into something so much bigger than just learning something for a test,” she shares. Personal challenges, such as relationships or health issues, are often discussed during their sessions. By creating a supportive environment where her students feel safe to share, she fosters meaningful connections that enhance the tutoring experience.

Alexis says that her students enrich her life just as much as she enriches theirs. She notes, “It is just a wonderful sense of accomplishment – the support they receive here.” With the resources available and the backing of dedicated YLI staff, she continues to guide her students toward achieving their goals, while also enriching her own life with the joy of giving back. Volunteer tutoring is not just a role for Alexis; it’s a fulfilling experience that embodies her belief in the power of education to transform lives.
