Adrian, originally from Cuba, is making a new start in the United States. After studying culinary arts, he realized that art was always a constant passion. Now, Adrian is balancing his work as an artist with learning English as a Second Language (ESL) at the York Literacy Institute, where he attends intermediate-level ESL classes.

“Starting over has not been easy, especially when it comes to language and adapting to a new culture,” Adrian shares. The support he’s found at York Literacy Institute has been transformative: “The York Literacy Institute has had a very positive impact on my life by helping me improve my English and gain confidence in my daily interactions.”

One memorable moment for Adrian occurred during a class activity involving the popular candy, Mentos. In his home country, playing with food is considered disrespectful. “This experience felt very different to me at first,” Adrian explains. The class used Mentos for an interactive exercise, something Adrian had never experienced before. “However, it became a meaningful moment because it showed me another side of learning,  one that can be interactive, creative, and even playful.” The activity helped him feel more relaxed in class and opened his mind to new ways of connecting with a different culture. 

What Adrian is learning and experiencing in class and through life in the U.S. is also fueling his creative side. Alongside his studies, Adrian is developing his own art project, Sylva Ars Studio. His work explores themes of transition, identity, and building a new life. Through painting and mixed media, Adrian reflects on his personal journey: “My work reflects personal transitions and the process of building a new life, using art as a way to explore identity and change.”
