Finding Community and Confidence: Tarsila’s Next Step
Tarsila, a Chemical Engineer from Brazil, moved to the U.S. with her husband two
years ago. As she settled into her new life here, she quickly realized that improving
her English was essential to connect with the community and businesses around
her. Tarsila was able to read English for technical issues but she needed to improve
her conversational skills. That’s when she reached out to the York Literacy Institute (YLI).

At YLI, Tarsila discovered more than just a place to learn English as a Second Language; she became part of a nurturing community that motivated her to grow both personally and professionally. Tarsila shares,

“I enjoyed my first class because I met an American teacher with a ‘real’ accent that would help me. The atmosphere pushed me to learn and meet new people.”

This supportive environment gave her the confidence to practice speaking and
listening, essential skills previously challenging for her.

One of the key figures in Tarsila’s journey was YLI Next Step Coordinator Lisa
Eckenrode, who provided invaluable guidance throughout the process. “Lisa
reviewed my resume, gave me interview training, and helped me find job
opportunities,” Tarsila explained. This support was instrumental in her job search,
ultimately leading her to a full-time position at a reputable global company
specializing in laboratory services—a significant milestone in her transition to life in the U.S.

Tarsila’s experience shows the impact of the York Literacy Institute and its
dedicated staff, who not only teach English but also empower students to adapt and
thrive in a new environment. She eloquently said,

“This place (YLI) and the people are like a huge hug for those facing everything new in their lives.”

Through its free ESL classes and unwavering support, the York Literacy Institute continues to make a difference in the lives of newcomers like Tarsila, helping them build bright futures in a new country.
