Literacy: Beyond the Word
This week marks National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, an initiative aimed at raising public awareness of the importance of adult education and the positive impact of family literacy. Let’s examine the significance of literacy and its impact on individuals in Pennsylvania.

Literacy today extends far beyond the traditional definition of simply reading and writing. It encompasses a lifelong continuum of skills, including numeracy, digital literacy, media literacy, and education for sustainable development. These skills are essential in today’s world, as they enable individuals to navigate both personal and professional landscapes with confidence and competence.

In Pennsylvania (PA), the statistics surrounding adult literacy are concerning. According to the PIAAC U.S. Skills Map, approximately 18% of PA residents aged 16 to 74 operate at or below proficiency level 1, which classifies them as functionally illiterate and at risk of struggling with everyday written materials. A person who has achieved a level of Functional Literacy can read such texts as these:

Additionally, nearly 38% are at or below proficiency level 2, indicating that a sizeable portion of the population lacks basic literacy skills. A person who has achieved a level of Basic Literacy—about eighth-grade level— can read such texts as these:

At the York Literacy Institute, we address the challenges of adult literacy all year long by offering free literacy instruction to empower adults in York County. Through our programs, we aim to equip individuals with the skills they need to engage effectively in their homes, workplaces, and communities.

We’re grateful to take part in National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week—a week that brings national recognition to the mission we work to fulfill year-round. If you are interested in taking action to advocate for greater support in literacy initiatives or witness firsthand the transformative power of education, consider joining us as a volunteer, tutor, or committee member.
