Francine teaches English as a Second Language and Civics at York Literacy Institute (YLI) to help adults prepare for the U.S. Citizenship test. With over 30 years of teaching experience, she emphasizes the importance of a supportive classroom environment. She states, “I really love what I do,” and views herself as a cheerleader for her students. Francine believes that effective learning requires a sense of belonging: “I want them to feel like they’re part of the community.” Her classes have to be interactive because many of the students working night shifts postpone their sleep schedule to attend class. She remarks, “The more you get them to be participants rather than observers, the better it is.”
The impact of her teaching is clear; this year, 9 out of 12 YLI students who achieved U.S. citizenship were from her class. Francine aims for her students to not only pass the test but to be engaged citizens. “I want them to be good citizens. I want them to be involved in our society.”
One of her students shares, “Besides improving my English, Francine’s classes have helped me in many other ways. I began volunteering in the community, which really helped me gain confidence, communicate better, and strengthen my self-esteem. I also voted for the first time in my county election, and that experience made me feel excited and truly connected to the community.”
Another student states, “I’m truly grateful for the support. Since becoming a U.S. citizen, I’ve already seen positive changes in my life. I recently secured a better job, and I feel more confident and hopeful about the future.”
This class extends beyond language learning, ultimately altering lives. Francine sums it up by saying she helps them one at a time, hoping to inspire them to create ripples of positive change.
