Insights of a York Literacy Institute Teacher

York Literacy Institute (YLI) provides six levels of English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. New students take an assessment test upon enrollment at YLI to determine their English language skill level. This assessment allows them to be placed in a class with other students at
the same level, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience that addresses varying skill sets. The Pre-Literacy ESL class is specifically designed for individuals who don’t know any English. This foundational course covers the essentials, including the alphabet, numbers, and basic
sentence structure, enabling students to build competence in a supportive environment. YLI is the only organization in York County that provides classes for students at this ESL level. One of our instructors, Stacy, offers insight into her Pre-Literacy ESL class, which meets twice a
week at York Literacy Institute.

With a teaching background that includes children and adults, Stacy approaches her lessons with empathy and understanding. She notes that teaching adults differs from teaching children; a balance of respect and simplicity is essential because “we must remember that they know what a book is—they just don’t know the English word for it.” Stacy emphasizes the challenges her students face and often reassures them by telling them, “English is hard; I do understand.” She encourages them to be patient and persistent, believing that building trust with her students fosters a comfortable learning environment.

Stacy always tries to think of ways to help her students understand certain commonly misunderstood concepts. For example, she points out that students often confuse the words “borrow” and “lend.” To explain this, she defines the difference between “take” and “give.” Additionally, she notes that, “contractions are hard for students to understand.” Phrases such as “it’s” for “it is” or “I’m” for “I am” can create confusion for those unfamiliar with these shortcuts. Stacy reviews some concepts multiple times and encourages students to practice regularly. She emphasizes the importance of engaging activities, such as games and collaborative exercises, which help students learn while having fun. Stacy expresses her love for teaching, stating it brings her greater satisfaction, joy, and contentment than any of her previous careers. “Watching their faces light up, hearing them talk, listening to them read, and seeing them help another student—there is nothing like that,” she says.

“I’ve had students who have been doctors, dentists, and lawyers in their home country who are now here working in warehouses, restaurants, and housekeeping. Their entire life changed so they could be in a place where they feel like their families will have more opportunities or where
they came to be safe. And that is a big change for them. I admire them. They have to work so hard to get that career back here.” Learning English is the first step. So, teaching at YLI every day, “I feel like I can make a difference in at least one person’s life.” Stacy is one of the many exceptional teachers at York Literacy Institute. Her extensive knowledge and genuine care for her students go beyond typical teaching. Every day in our
classrooms, positive things are happening; as our students learn, new opportunities open up for them. Many students express their gratitude to their teachers, to YLI, and to our generous donors. They are eager to grow, become part of the community, and one day give back by
helping others in the same ways they are being helped today.
