50th Anniversary Event: AI & The Future of Education & Literacy
As part of York Literacy Institute’s 50th Anniversary celebration, YLI welcomed Dr. James Norrie, author of Beyond the Code: AI’s Promise, Peril and Possibility for Humanity, for Authoring Insights, an evening exploring the impact of artificial intelligence on education and literacy. Held in the stunning Yorkview Hall at York College of Pennsylvania, which sponsored the event, the evening began with a special recognition of YLI’s milestone anniversary. State Representative Carol Hill-Evans joined YLI President and CEO Jason McSherry to present a citation from the Pennsylvania House of Representatives honoring York Literacy Institute on its 50th anniversary.

Dr. Norrie’s presentation was both eye-opening and thought-provoking. As an AI expert who studies the technology daily, he made a complex, rapidly changing subject understandable while sharing how York College is already adapting and evolving its teaching in response to AI.

Dr. Norrie noted that this fall marks the arrival of the first “AI-native” college class—students who are “the first generation to complete much of their secondary education with generative AI constantly available.” His presentation offered plenty to think about as YLI considers what literacy will mean in the years ahead. Read more of Dr. Norrie’s thoughts on the arrival of the AI-native generation in his recent op-ed for University Business.
